If you’re in the Los Angeles area and thinking about a great tattoo, you have to hit High Art Tattoo Gallery in the Mid-City area. High Art is an unassuming shop packed with talent. Ruby Croak, the owner, created my piece and also did an amazing job with my partner’s as well. Ruby is a no-nonsense artist with a talent for interpretation who’ll give it to you straight while honoring your vision. She does exceptional black and gray, can rock watercolor and has examples of nearly everything in between. If you can imagine it, they can create it.

I spent several hours in Ruby’s chair and it’s easy to tell why she’s won awards for her work. She’s efficient, patient and a perfectionist. She listens to your questions, concerns and ideas and addresses each one. And the shop is in no way intimidating to newbies or females, like many testosterone-heavy shops can. This is a bright, quirky spot where anyone should feel comfortable. Prices at High Art are fair and worth literally every cent. And trust me, the saying is true – once you’ve dipped your toe in the world of tattoo art, you’ll find it hard to stop. A day at Ruby’s Hight Art Tattoo Gallery will guarantee it.

I didn't know what I was missing in a tattoo parlor until I went to High Art. Ruby was professional, welcoming, and really inspired confidence with her knowledge and experience. I felt comfortable walking into her shop immediately; very BIPOC and LGBTQ+ friendly. Made sure I was comfortable for a 6 hour sitting, encouraged me to take breaks if needed, and put on some movie gems to pass the time.
I went in with an idea of what I wanted for a cover up, though when I got there and she saw it, Ruby explained why the cover up wouldn't work well. We came up with an alternative together and not only do I love my new tattoo, but Ruby was able to fix the original tattoo! She was also available via text for questions about the healing process. I highly recommend coming here for you next tattoo! They also take walk ins and same day appointments.

*Response to owner: Wow, no accountability! He literally gave me a marker and allowed me to choose the placement, then went with his own AFTER we identified our preference, which he never declined or advised otherwise. He should've declined the work or verbalized his expert opinion, if he actually thought differently, not proceed with his own undisclosed preference. That sounds like an abuse of power. My mom was excited because she didn't know any better and was simply resolved not to go through any more discomfort... Don't let that cookie cutter waiver make you too comfortable. For all reading, be advised*

Only taking the time to review because this is important.

Just took my 60 year old mom in for a nose piercing. We called in advance, phone was answered and we went in right away. Very cute shop.

After waivers, we went in to the piercers booth space. The guy marked her nose, then I marked where I thought the placement should be. We decided my placement mark was preferred and my mom told him "the black spot", my spot, is where the piercing would go. Next thing I know, he's pierced the wrong spot! Surprisingly, my mom was so excited she didn't complain, but the nosering is NOT where it should've been. I said this outloud and he said "yeah, but it still looks good". What?! This is my mother's face and you literally missed the mark! Listen to your customer!

Ruby Croak designed and completed a coverup tattoo for me on my inner forearm. She also tattooed both of my wife’s watercolor pieces on her shoulders and arms. We had gotten several tattoos prior to seeing Ruby so we weren’t new to tattooing but after seeing Ruby we realized we were in fact new to being tattooed by an ARTIST. Of all the tattoos we have, the ones we’re always complemented on were done by Ruby. Her reputation for watercolor brought my wife and I from Sacramento, CA to get tattooed in Los Angeles, CA and it’s the best decision we could’ve made. She has an eye for details and is very passionate about the work she puts on your body. Her tattoos have healed amazingly. They literally look better as they’ve aged. Pure master class in tattooing. So honored to wear her art and we’ll be back for more. Highly recommend!!!
